Anibal Tafur is a Peruvian structural engineer, researcher and lecturer currently working on his PhD degree at Rice University (Houston, USA) under the supervision of Dr. Jamie Padgett. His main research focus is on resilience modeling of transportation infrastructure subjected to natural hazards.

Anibal graduated in Civil Engineering at the PUCP in 2011. He was awarded with the ‘President of the Nation’ Scholarship by the Peruvian Ministry of Education to undertake a Masters degree in Structural Engineering at the University of Manchester (UK), where he graduated in 2016 with honours obtaining the highest average score of his class.

At the University of Manchester, Anibal proposed a retrofitting method for seismically vulnerable bridges, currently a critical issue in Peru. He worked under the supervision of Professor Thomas Swailes. This project was highly appraised by the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering, being nominated for ‘Faculty’s Distinguished Achievement Award – PGT Student of the Year 2016’.

Anibal has taught structural subjects at the School of Science and Engineering in PUCP, such as Statics and Mechanics of Materials. He has also collaborated as a research assistant at the Civil Engineering Department. His main research focus was Earthquake Engineering, including seismic analysis, computer modelling, vulnerability assessment and rehabilitation of structures. He worked on a project focused on seismic vulnerability assessment and retrofit of bridges in Peru.

In November 2017 he attended the 6th Structural Engineers World Congress (SEWC) held in Cancun, Mexico, where he presented a paper on his project about seismic retrofitting of bridges.

Anibal is licensed to legally practice engineering by the Peruvian Engineer’s Council (CIP) with registration number 146036. He has participated in the elaboration of many structural projects including housing buildings, hospitals, shopping malls. He accumulates 5 years of experience as a structural engineer, working both independently and for consulting companies.
